I sat there, looking around at the empty camper. The desk was tidy. A rinsed coffee mug sat in the sink. The laptop and the MP3 player were gone.

Even with morning sunlight streaming in the windows, the camper just didn’t seem as wonderful without Aunt Hannah in it.

Slowly, I went back inside the house. As I crossed the deck, I could barely look at the flats of baby vegetables sitting there. They were probably wondering who was going to plant them. I was wondering the same thing.

I trudged back up to my room to bring Lulu a handful of fresh grass, which was a treat for her. At least she was always there for me. At least she didn’t go disappearing off to exotic countries at the drop of a hat to have incredible adventures with wild animals, leaving me stuck behind in boring old Boston. I picked her up and she snuffled her head into the crook of my elbow, her favorite spot. I buried my face in her sweet-smelling fur and told myself sternly that scientists don’t cry.

After a few minutes, I decided to pour out my woes to Dakota. When my e-mail came up, as usual there was a message waiting for me.

Subject: Fio and Teng

Fio is doing a lot better. She’s made a friend, and he protects her from the others. She’s much happier now that she can hang with the group. She hated being all alone.
